Understanding the Game
- Official Game Play: Players play full court games with official time and score. Referees enforce standard rules that follow USA basketball age specific guidelines.
- In-Depth Rules: Players learn more comprehensive rules, including fouls, violations, and basic game strategies. They understand the importance of positions and player responsibilities on the court.
- Game Strategy: More advanced offensive and defensive strategies are introduced, such as setting screens, understanding spacing, and transitioning between offense and defense.
- Developing Strategy: Introduction to game strategy is implemented and players learn more about general offensive positions and more advance team play concepts.
Developing Fundamentals
- Enhanced Dribbling: Dribbling drills become more complex, including using both hands, performing between the leg crossovers, spin moves, and improving control under pressure against both half and full court defensive pressure.
- Advanced Passing: Players work on a variety of passes (one handed entry passes) with an emphasis on precision and speed. They also learn to pass while moving and under defensive pressure.
- Shooting Skills: Shooting practice includes form shooting, layups from different angles, jump shots, and free throws. Players practice shooting from different spots on the court and learn to shoot with consistency.
- Defensive Techniques: Players are taught advanced defensive skills such as proper stance, footwork, understanding how to guard players effectively, and basic team defense concepts like man-to-man and help defense.
Learning about Teamwork
- Complex Team Drills: Drills that require more coordination and communication among players are emphasized, such as running plays, executing give-and-go moves, and understanding player rotations.
- Role Understanding: Players learn the specific roles and responsibilities of different positions (guards, forwards, centers) and how to work together to achieve team goals.
- Leadership and Support: Coaches encourage leadership skills, teaching players to support each other, communicate effectively on the court, and work together to solve problems.
Having Fun
- Challenging Drills: Drills and activities are designed to be both challenging and fun, keeping players focusing on improving their skills, while also improve conditioning and athletic abilities.
- Skill Competitions: Fun competitions such as shooting contests, dribbling challenges, and mini-tournaments are used to motivate players and celebrate their progress.
- Positive Reinforcement: Coaches and parents continue to create a positive environment, emphasizing enjoyment, personal growth, and a love for the game.
Overall, the 11-14 girls basketball program works to create a comprehensive approach aimed to provide a positive and enriching experience for girls of all skill levels, helping them grow as basketball players and individuals.
